i was wondering if there is any useful information you can give me as a single soldier coming to Ft. Campbell from 35th ADA in Korea.

what can i expect when i get there?
what is the likelihood of deployment?
    what is the housing like?
    what services can i expect?
will it be easy for me to go to school?

Unfortunately, I can?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t give you any information on about this. Did you go to your ACS/Family Services on post? They can give you a lot of information. Do you have a sponsor yet? Go to Ft.Campbell Facebook page and post your questions there, someone will point you in the right direction. I am sure.

We?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve been stationed at Ft. Campbell for 4 years now. Two years off post and two years on post. I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m going to try to help answer your questions?¢‚Ǩ¬¶if you are still looking for answers.

what can i expect when i get there?

Well?¢‚Ǩ¬¶.in reference to what? Depends on when you are getting here I suppose. Ft. Campbell is quite a large post and sits on the KY/TN border, which can be confusing when it comes to which county you live in, where you go for your driver?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s license, license plates, taxes, and what all. The immediate cities outside of the gates are Oak Grove, KY and Clarksville, TN; which overlap each other. About 15 minutes north of Gate 7 is Hopkinsville, KY. If you are coming here soon you may find everything closes much too early for convenience on post, because the majority of soldiers are currently deployed.

what is the likelihood of deployment?

Ft. Campbell is the Army?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s most deployed forces?¢‚Ǩ¬¶..so your likelihood is very high. As I said previously, the majority are currently deployed, and as units come home, others leave. You will notice businesses off post keep signs up saying ?¢‚Ǩ?ìWelcome Home Soldiers?¢‚Ǩ¬ù indefinitely, because it would be too hard to actually keep up with when and who has returned, and even when the majority of the soldiers are home, there will still be some units deployed. Unless you have recently returned from deployment and have your 12 month stabilization, you will most likely deploy once you arrive if your assigned unit is already deployed, unless there would be a reason to put you on rear-d?¢‚Ǩ¬¶.at least that?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s how it seems to work for new arrivals?¢‚Ǩ¬¶.however, I am not the authority on this.

    what is the housing like?

Housing for single soldiers on post is barracks, if I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m not mistaken. I can?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t really say what they are like. I saw my husbands?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ units?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ barracks years ago, but they have been remodeling them while the soldiers are deployed, as well as building new ones with plans to move some units around.

Housing for families varies greatly on post. There are a number of old neighborhoods, and some new neighborhoods. One of the oldest neighborhoods was finally torn down this past fall, it was ghetto for sure, lol. One other old neighborhood is supposed to be renovated, but no real idea as to when that will be. The old neighborhoods were built around the 70?¢‚Ǩ¬?s, so they have to hand out lead paint notices, and they don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t like to admit it, but the older homes are infested with brown recluses. There are a number of gyms, community centers, playgrounds, etc.

    what services can i expect?

There are a number of services and programs for soldiers and dependents for all sorts of things. Some of the links provided in previous posts may help with that info. There are tours and things given for new arrivals to help acquaint you with the post. According to the PX employees, it is the largest PX in existence. The commissary is pretty big, but apparently not big enough for such a large post, the lines there can be very very long.

will it be easy for me to go to school?

Yes, it should be. There is an army education center on post. And off post there are a number of community type colleges, and then Austin Peay State University is in Clarksville, TN. And there?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s always online colleges.

    I hope that helped some.

I have to agree with the infestation of brown recluse. I am in Hammond Heights 4 bedroom. I have no other spiders except for the recluse. Bug bombing does no good. It does not kill just adjitates them. I have had the place professionally bombed and have done the raid home jobs up to 3 times in a summer. Cambell Crossing Housing is a joke. I dislike talking badly about people but am extremely dissatisfied with them. They are like talking to a wall!! They make excuses for everything. I understand we are in the south and an occasional recluse in the home is normal but not 4 and 5 a day. I have young children. They are soo concerned with safety hazards. Putting christmas lights on the top of your housing overhang. Grills under your deck. I feel more needs to be done with the venomous spider problem before it kills a little child.

When you move out there is a $325.00 ?¢‚Ǩ?ìcleaning fee?¢‚Ǩ¬ù. My neighbor chose to do it herself?¢‚Ǩ¬¶NEVER DO THIS!! I helped her clean ALL DAY. The house was spotless. She needed to only pay to have the floors stripped and waxed. The housing lady walked in with an immediate bad attitude and said, ?¢‚Ǩ?ìYou might as well pay the cleaning fee because I will find enough here to charge you?¢‚Ǩ¬ù. Mind you this was the first 10 seconds into her conversation and she had not even started to inspect the home yet. Its their way of making money and sadly there is nothing that can be done about it. I am looking forward to my PCS move. My first experience with base housing has not been a good one.

Did your neighbor file an IG complaint, Autumn? You could have signed a sworn statement attesting to the truth of it. The housing office likely would have been put under investigation and that housing official may even have been fired (hopefully). That was completely unethical and inappropriate of that housing official.

To all else that read this, please DO NOT just pay the cleaning fee. MAKE the housing office (and all other agencies) treat your family ethically and fairly. There are actions you can take to remedy situations such as this. Sometimes your command can help remedy these situations. The Inspector General?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s office and ICE complaints (http://ice.disa.mil/index.cfm?fa=site&site_id=339&dep=DoD) can also help you. Don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t forget to utilize the patient advocates if you have issues with ARMY medical either. It works. Above all else, please take the actions to help your family (and others that may be affected by future problems of the same) have the best possible experience while in the military no matter where you are stationed. One never knows when one negative report can help ease the frustrations and prevent mistreatment towards numerous others. Good luck here at Fort Campbell. :)

PS. ICE can also be used to commend those doing a great job around post.

Thank you soo much for your advice. I had no idea we could have taken this route. Unfortunately, she moved the following day out of the state otherwise we would have taken this route. This will however help another family that chooses to do a Self-Clean?¢‚Ǩ¬¶?¢‚Ǩ¬¶.

ICE sometimes works and sometimes doesn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t. It worked in Ft.Lewis. It doesn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t on Carson. They have to answer you within 3 days so that the issue is not passed on to the Garrison/Post commander. But that also means you could just get a ?¢‚ǨÀúshut-you-up- answer?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢. Another thing to do is go through Post AFAP You can look that up on the website. That said it ultimately depends on the post commander and it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s a fairly long process. At our last Division based AFAP I had a hard time pressing for improvements on housing issues, but it was considered and passed on. NOW it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s up to the higher instance. As for the cleaning?¢‚Ǩ¬¶I get shoulder shrugs. When I cleaned at Ft.Leonard Wood ?¢‚Ǩ?ìback?¢‚Ǩ¬ù then. Everything was fine, but I sure know what attitude some of those inspectors have. Again, it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s an installation thing, and because of that there is not much you can do. Of course it also depends on the personality. Government employees especially with preferences are hard next to impossible to fire so what?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s the incentive? Only if you have someone in a position that actually cares is the job done right.

ooh that turned out longer than I anticipated?¢‚Ǩ¬¶LOL sorry. I guess I am venting, because I have issues too.

Oh, yes, the recluse problem is BAD! And you are right, the number of them found on a daily basis is terrible! I grew up in this region and have lived off post as mentioned before, and have never once ever saw a brown recluse in any of the homes I have ever lived in, until we moved on post,. So when they try to use the excuse that they are just common in this area, I want to scream :( And I keep our home free of the clutter they love to hide and nest in, as well as routinely check for them hiding behind or under furniture just to feel comfortable sitting or sleeping. Just last week I found one crawling up my shoulder when sitting on my couch, during the daytime when they should not be active!! Talk about freaking out! My 3 year old has started screaming every time he sees one creeping along the floor or wall and in his toys!! The pest control company Housing uses is a joke when it comes to this problem and they will not allow you to pay your own pest control company! I am so sick of them and sooo glad to be PCSing soon, LOL!

As for the cleaning fee?¢‚Ǩ¬¶.yeah, I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m dreading that fight with our upcoming PCS :( I have heard plenty of horror stories about what to expect from housing here, from all our friends that have already left :( I know when we moved in, this place was NOT clean by my standards, and I had to re-clean it?¢‚Ǩ¬¶.They definitely aren?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t using that 300 bucks on good cleaners. I also noted these things on the move-in inspection sheet they had me fill out! We will see what happens when the time comes.

Despite all that, I will say that Maintenance is really great, so at least that is one good thing. Even though the wait time for someone to come out is kind of ridiculous, when they do get to you they take care of the problem quickly?¢‚Ǩ¬¶.or so it has been for us.

  • Housing on Fort Campbell is horrible. They have a major problem with brown recluse infestation. They are in the ceilings and walls. The buildings need to be condemned. My son is a E5 and they find 10-15 recluses a day. Housing says that is not a problem that they are in the red zone. It has been a total nightmare.
